I was banned from Wikinews for writing an article. I only used foreign-language sources, and rather than finding someone who could "verify" what was very clearly written in another language, they rejected it and banned me when I tried to get it approved again!

I think it's sleazy and wrong. My relative sent me 20.00 bucks out of which they took .88 cents. I know, not a big deal but a surprise to me because I got money from them last month and they didn't charge anything! Just another case of sticking it to the consumer, we just get shafted left and right nowadays and it really sucks!

Interesting take on Wikinews. You're right. The world of journalism is moving on. Sticking to an old model that can only belatedly regurgitate published news from established news sites is not a recipe for success. Wikinews seems to be dying.

Equalism it not a "new word to describe Feminism". It is a separate concept. Feminism is not now, and never has been, an equality movement. It has always been a women's advocacy movement. What goals it had that were legitimate were achieved in Western cultures decades ago, and not it is simply a monolith of momentum that needs to go away.

That's quite odd; all the women I know either work within a professional field, are studying to enter a professional field, or run their own business. My managers have usually been female, and I've largely worked within companies run by women. I can think of only one exception within the people I know - a woman who is currently trying to work out what career she wants to be in, after losing interest in her current profession.

I can see that different people move in different circles - but I've never actually met any women like the ones you describe. (That's not to say that I don't know women who've gotten a tan to look good on their wedding day!) Possibly it's just to do with the fact that similar people wind up gravitating to each other, and I don't tend to run into people who watch reality shows.

That said, I do know a lot of men (including my husband) who are gaga about video games and science fiction shows in much the same way as you describe.

I'd disagree that we need a new word to describe feminism. We just need more recognition that feminism is about equal rights (and respect) between the sexes - and nothing more than that. I'd blame the radicalisation of feminism on the Dworkinite movement, and I had no idea that these backwards and controversial views were still popular until the recent flame-up within the atheist community.

Feminism should, through the promotion of women's rights, offer greater choice and equality to men too, and to do this by removing a gender bias within professions, social roles and politics. Having been raised in a feminist household, it is horrifying to me to discover that the movement that gave my parents the security and confidence to relate to each other as equals, has now been reduced to base insults like "all men are rapists and pigs".

I get the feeling most of the women you know are young, or you live in a place wherein women are expected to be that way. Now, don't get me wrong, I believe that women are less likely to aspire to a career like heading a Fortune 500 company, but that's more because of sex. Men are seen as more attractive if they're wildly successful, whereas that doesn't factor into a woman's attractiveness. However, women have to work their asses off if they want to have a high ranking job, much more so than men. Why? Because, on a subconscious level, as I said before, we're just seen as less capable.

Aaaaand I have shit to do, so I'm going offline now, sorry. Assuming this thread is still alive in a few hours, I might be back, but it will have almost certainly degraded into nothing but trolls (and possibly Spiderman) by then.

In some companies, CEO is a serious leadership role, in others it's a largely symbolic go-between for the board and the department heads.Having a female or minority CEO looks "progressive", so companies tend to do it when the organization of the company means it's not a major decision-making role. Or sometimes when it is, either when they've got an exceptional candidate for the position or a stupid board.

oh and how many girls do you know want to become head of a fortune 500 company? i'm not exaggerating here but most of the chicks i know usually go on about going tanning or going to the movies. or survivor, or other reality television shows. but mostly gossiping. the odd few i know that want to aspire to do anything want to become nurses, doctors, and similar fields of work.i'm surprised there's even 16% women running those companies to be honest with you.

In the country I live in, women are paid less, we've never had a female head of state, only 1 sixth of the members of Congress are female, women are far less likely to be elected if they appear authoritative, whereas men aren't affected by that, and only about 16% of Fortune 500 company CEOs are women.

you can fight any breach of those rights in court, but you don't need a movement for that. that's what court is for, is it not?

I checked out her blog. She clearly explains the incident in one of her videos and it's obvious that the guy wasn't being sexist, intimidating, or negative in any way. I didn't fix the BRM label to a brick. I used a plain brown box and threw all my unwanted old paperbacks, ripped jeans, ripped socks, worn out shoes, a few outdated canned goods, an old broken cordless phone, and one ripped pocketbook in. I taped it up with clear packing tape, fixed the BRM to it, and slapped it down on the post office counter. I told them it was all set, prepaid and walked out. I weighed it on my digital bathroom scale before I left the house and it weighed almost 40 lbs! :-) Easy way to do some quick house keeping. Paid for courtesy of an investment firm that repeatedly kept soliciting me. Every time they solicited me, I'd get another BRM in with it. LOL Every time I clean house, they get it back!
